Himadri
Naval was born in Burma, to a Dogri father and a Punjabi mother.
She began sketching from the second grade onward, at the St. Josephs
Convent in Mandalay. During the Japanese occupation of Burma the
family fled to India, reaching Lahore after a treacherous trek over
the Assam hills. At Lahore she studied art at the Babesh Sanyal
Studio and also completed her graduation.
Always keen on drawing and sketching through her years as student,
marriage and motherhood, her first painting of a woman figure was
exhibited in the Congress session in Amritsar.
In
early seventies the family migrated to the US where Himadri completed
her masters degree and joined the Art Students League in Manhattan.
There she sold her first painting in America and has continued to
do so over the past 35 years. The 35 years in the US have seen her
work with oils, acrylic and more recently with pastels. Her first
pastel, a mustard field won her the first prize at a competition
recently.
For
this exhibition she has chosen to revisit memories of the ancestral
home in Amritsar.
